Wordpress TinyMCE Patch 2.0.5

I spent the greater part of the morning working on upgrading my Wordpress 2.02 TinyMCE from the default old version to the new TinyMCE 2.0.5 which is scheduled to be released with Wordpress 2.1. I’ve created a zip file that you can unzip over your wordpress installation that will upgrade your TinyMCE to 2.0.5.

I have only done preliminary testing and so far it seems OK but I’d highly suggest making a backup of your entire Wordpress folder just to be sure if you need to roll back.

I have tested this with the Gallery2 WPG2 plugin. There were some extra hacks I had to make in the tiny MCE code to make it backward compatible.

Download the patch here.

  • Is there any pictures for this?

  • Let me add some pictures to the post. Give me 10 minutes :)

  • I uploaded your patch to my WP installation, and now when I try to publish and/or save a post I get a dialog box asking if I’m sure I want to navigate away from the site and telling me if I do my changes will not be saved. If I click OK, only the title of the post is published.

I am using WP 2.02, the default theme, and the following plugins:

    AKismet
    Vanguard’s Calendar 2.0
    ImageManager
    wp-contact-form

    Any idea what’s going on?

BTW, I’m just running tests on this blog while I try to design a theme. If you need my URL, let me know.

  • Let me check it out today. You aren’t running any differnet skins for the admin tool right?

  • Bruce — Can you email me your zipped up wp-includes and wp-admin folders? I’ll look into it.

  • Bruce — You also might want to try clearing your caches. I had to do this. Try deleting all the files from your Wordpress cache directory, restart, then shift-reload on your browser once you are on the post page . That should fix your problem.

  • Thanks, Grant! Your last suggestion did the trick and posting is working again. Now I can get back to work on my theme.

  • Grant,

I’m not getting anything now. Rolling back did nothing, either. Now I’ve just got the old non-WYSIWG editor. I made sure that the visual editor button was checked in both the User page and the Options/Write page, too, so I didn’t make that classic error. Flushed the caches, too.

    Nada.

  • Dan, it sounds like a caching issue. Which wordpress cache folder did you clear? Also, make sure you clear the cache in your web browser while you are not viewing your blog.

Do you have GZIP compression enabled? If so, try disabling that.

  • Grant,

The stuff in “wp-content/cache”, although it never clears entirely since some files are always being used. Even with “show hidden files” enabled, my FTP software tells me files exist in the directory, though I can’t see any. I even installed a plug-in that’s supposed to disable the cache, but I can’t stop it from caching.

    Any suggestions?

  • I take it you aren’t able to stop your wordpress server to delete all the files in that folder and then restart it are you?

So even with the old files back, it still doesn’t work? If so, it’s definitely a WP cache issue. Is the server hosted on a windows or linux environment, do u know?

  • Grant,

    Another try:
    1. Disabled gZip.
    2. Used cPanel to finally blow the entire cache away.
    3. Re-enabled “Visual Editor” in User and Write/Options.
    4. Ctrl-f5 in Firefox on the Write page.

    Nothing. Still no TinyMCE.

Reloading all the files again. Grr.

  • Grant,

I’m finally back in business. Have no idea what happened. I went in and deleted everything related to the replacement files and started from scratch. FTP issues? I have no clue. At least it’s working again.

    Thanks. Sorry for troubling you.

  • Weird. Sorry it turned out to be a hassle for you. I know a couple people have tried it with success but that whole caching issue was a problem in every install I know of so who knows.

I’m sure 2.1 isn’t too far out anyway, couple months…

    Best of luck

  • Thanks grant for that patch its great the spell checker is ace!

  • I just unzipped the patch over my WP-folder and after a few refreshes I still miss two icons (bold/italic). I checked the name of the images and they’re called bold.giffoo and italic.giffoo. That was strange I thought and pressed the image-icon and strange just got weirder. Have a look: http://www.haas.se/WordpressMCEpatch.jpg

  • Dude, you rule!!!!!!!! Great hack. Saved me a TON of time.

  • I installed your patch and I’ve encountered two issues:

    1. Inline windows won’t go away, so I disabled the TinyMCE inline window plug-in.

    2. Every post now brings me to a page asking “Are you sure you want to edit this post” after I click on “Publish” or “Save.” When I click on “Save and Continue” it also gives me this same prompt, but after I click on yes it does not return me back to my posting.

Anyway, great job getting this patch up! I understand that you’re probably not going to act as tech support, but it doesn’t hurt if I ask :)

  • very interesting. i’m adding in RSS Reader
